The following information is taken from "the book" -a 60 page article
written by Sarah Weldon in 1964 when she was 86. It is about the Ontario Lummis
branch.
" I don`t know what year it was or how old I was when I first saw John
Lummis, but it was the custom for him to visit our home on the shore of Lake
Scugog in the township of Cartwright once a year at least, and he would stay
several days. The family came from Lower Canada and bought a mill site on our
Concession Road. There were seventeen or eighteen children born, but not all
survived, and the graves of some of the babies are in Ceasar`s burying ground
on the Jobb Farm nearby."
John had obviously moved from Montreal with his wife Sarah Doncaster also
from Montreal who was of French Huguenot origin. She died at the age of 45. John
later married Margaret Williams of Lindsay but there were no children from this
marriage which was not a success and Margaret left.
John is described as " an even tempered man". He played the fiddle.
" He was a little man but with a sense of humour." He apparantly liked
to drink.
The family was considered stylish which the writer attributed to the French
flair. She states when her sister became a Lummis "she was naturly nervous
in the company of ladies so expert in style, dress and social life."
The article lists William as marrying Nellie Saddler of Lindsay; Fred married
Ruth Mcrae of Wyebridge; Dolf married Fannie Weldon in 1896.
The family moved from Cartwright to Wyebridge about 1874. Here they became
"well established" owning a flour mill,a woolen mill and a lumber mill.
John died on Oct 29 1904 at the age of 74,as a result of an accident. He was
driving home to Wyebridge from Barrie when the buggy in which he was riding upset
.
