426. Winthrop Wesley Rathburn was born on 29 Apr 1874 in Cleveland, Ohio and died on 13 Feb 1949 in Los Angeles, California aged 74.
General Notes:
WW Rathburn was ordered to pay £15.00 a month for support of Wesley. Evidently he did not pay. The court found that for a long time prior to Feb. 1, 1906 Mina had sole support and custody of Wesley. I wonder if he ever really knew the impact his desertion had on his son. He died of coronary sclerosis. I called it "hard heart."
I can tell from pictures my dad had saved in a very special pocket in his memory book, that he did have some contact with Winthrop's brother(s) in Nebraska in the early 1920's. There are pictures of when he went to visit them.
Winthrop was married four times. His daughter is from his third marriage. She is half sister to my Father. I noticed he married the Conaly woman the same day his wife died. The child was born seven months later. Here we go again. I was actually only a couple of years older than his daughter. My sister Loujen was the same age.
I remember that I was in Los Angeles living (age 12) with Billie Gardner's mother (she was a friend of my mothers). I was there to finish my orthodontia. It was during WWII. Billie's mom suggested that I write to my Grandfather. I did. I told him I was alone and that is was my idea to write and that I would like to meet him. He wrote back some three weeks later stating that he did not want to meet me because my grandmother and my father had hurt him too deeply. I accepted that and never attempted to contact him again. He died about four years later. I remember his handwriting as being very distinctive, old fashioned, and his signature as W. W. Rathburn. The letter was lost.
On March 16, 2004 I received a copy of my grandmother's divorce papers. It had the same old fashioned, slightly artistic signature. I do wish I could find out what caused him to be such a man. Evidently he refused to support Mina even while they were married. There may be some relatives in and around Boulder, Colorado.
Winthrop's birthday is listed in California death records as April 28,1874.
His SS# was: 551-093-824

Winthrop married Mina Ethel Nelson, daughter of Peter Dallas Nelson and Amanda Jane Garfield, on 1 Jul 1900 in Valaparasio, Nebraska. Mina was born on 22 Dec 1879 in David City, Butler, Nebraska and died on 30 Sep 1967 in Powell, Wyoming aged 87.
Noted events in her life were:
Divorced: Winthrop W. Rathburn, 1 Feb 1906, Lancaster Co., Nebraska. District Court of the Third Judicial District State of Nebraska. Divorced: Geroge B. Kerper, 5 Jun 1923, Park County, Wyoming. Divorced: Dr. JRA Whitlock, 27 Mar 1935, Park County, Wyoming. Misc:
We called her Nana. She was gifted with great beauty which was a legend in her day. People used to get up in their seats at opera houses to get a glimpse of her. She had a natural grace, a great sense of humor and people liked her. Her own father was a kind, hail fellow well met, kind of a guy, who cared a great deal about people, animals, and those around him. Hazel Kerper said that she had been spoiled as a child by getting a lot of attention in the hotels where her father was manager, owner, and cook as she was growing up.
She was a legendary cook. Nana had a secret recipe for fruit cake. For many years she made and sold it during the holidays. I remember many people coming to her house to buy it. She told me that her secret was using caramel as part of the binder. I have a recipe for caramel candy and am going to try it next xmas.
She was a surgical nurse, which made her a professional woman in her day. She ran the Powell Hospital for her husband Dr. Whitlock for twelve years. She seemed to have worked hard.
Nana was a woman who got along well, with men. She married men who were bright, talented, rich and alcoholic. Her second husband, George Kerper, was a Harvard educated attorney. Robie Whitlock was an MD who had an impeccable medical background (summa cum laude) etc. I knew and was devoted to both of those men. There was one other man she was connected to. I don't know if they were married or not. His name was Martin Bell. I think, from pictures, he was also prosperous. I have found no record of a marriage or divorce from him. He lived in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Nana also had many beautiful Jewels. She had a three carat diamond which my dad sold to a gambler. It was really a dazzler. She also had diamond bar pins, and many other diamond rings. Grandpa George gave her that jewelry. He was wealthy. I think they bought it as investment also. I was miffed at my dad for selling that ring. To him things like that were extraneous. For Wes Kerper, money had to be making money. He was the capitalist of his time.
In those days, even one failed marriage was a disaster for a woman. Nana did not verbally express her disappointment with herself but did drink. I believe she was afflicted by alcoholism, which in those days everyone condemned and no one understood. She was (also) a battered woman. George Kerper was free with his fists when drinking. I know she was verbally abusive when she drank. She did become abusive to Whitlock when they fought, as her alcoholism progressed. He was drinking and using too so it was a fine kettle of fish.
One thing I remember now is that she was emotionally distant. I never remember her talking about how she felt about anything. She didn't volunteer it with us. It may have been shame. I don't remember Mina as ever being unkind to me. It seems she did the appropriate thing but did not emote much warmth. I was taught that I was her
favorite because I looked like her. In fact, I was punished for being her favorite. I remember when she left on the train for a sojourn to the Menninger clinic, after her divorce from Robie. I cried all of the way to the train station because she was leaving. No one ever comforted me. I was about five.
Robie (Dr. Whitlock) committed suicide when I was about six. It devastated me. I worshiped him. He had married again. His new wife was pregnant with a child which was rumored to have been another man's child. He married the mother to give the child a name and soon after killed himself by a self administered dose of Morphine.
My Mother's family, the Bowmans, were riddled with alcoholism and scandal too. Many of the Garfield brothers died of alcoholism. Margaret Blair Garfield, Nana's grandmother was Irish but I don't have any indication Margaret or Amanda drank. My mother died as an addict of Codeine. Her father was illegitimate. One aunt was hurridly married. My mother's father had all of the earmarks of a sex addict. The family was troubled. They dealt with it by scapegoating and judging others. I can proudly say that those patterns are being overcome by the current generations. I tell all of this history of dysfunction so that posterity can see what the problems were. With the new information on DNA and genetic characteristics, it maybe that they lie in dysfunctional immune systems somewhere or perhaps in some brain function or endocrine anomaly. It is not meant as a condemnation.
My other grandmother Bowman hated Nana and hated my father. I was taught to deride my grandmother that she was some kind of leech and bad creature. My mother couldn't stand Nana who she felt encouraged my father's relationships with other women. The truth is that I think Nana felt my mother was some sort of a prima donna. Nana was emotionally supporting her son. She couldn't have done anything about any of her sons relationships and she may have been more tolerant because of her own failed relationships and her alcoholism.
Grandma Bowman always looked down her nose at her and stated Nana was married six times. That story is not true. Here, I might mention that Grandma Bowman came from a puritan background of the early New England. Grandma B's grandfather was a minister of the Church of Christ. One of the Colby's testified against someone in the Witch craft trials of Massachusetts. They were straight laced people and Grandma B. was no exception.
Nana took up with a woman named Dorothy Leib after her divorce from Robie in 1935. They stayed together until about 1943. Dorothy worked for my parents. I never did like her and did not understand their relationship. I do not believe Nana was Gay. I think she had been sexually abused by one of her uncles as a child. (The uncle was Solomon, who showed signs of being a pedophile) I think she was a sex addict and perhaps very narcissistic. The Womens' Movement would call her a progressive thinker. When she and Dorothy broke up, it was thunderous in the Kerper household. She ran away with Billie, my mother's best friend. Billie and Dorothy were very critical of me when I noted they drank too much. They moved from Cody soon after that.
There was a great unfairness in the judgment of Nana though. It was entirely without compassion. Please note the writings of (my sisters) Loujen and Janeen about her. In my opinion, this woman in our family was singled out as having all the negative characteristics no one else would admit to. The rest of the family had them, IN SPADES, and used her as a scapegoat.
