Minabelle married Capt. William 'Bill' Henry Elsom, son of Thomas Henry Elsom and Lauretta America Christie, on 15 Apr 1951. William was born on 31 Mar 1924 in Casper, Wyoming and died on 6 Jan 1952 in North Korea aged 27.
General Notes:
Bill was tall, 6'1", dark haired, dark eyed and attractive.
Bill had started flying with the Air National Guard of Wyoming to help himself through school. He graduated in Engineering, from the University of Wyoming. He was in his second year of law school when he was called back into sevice with the National Guard. He went to Corpus Christi, Texas first and then to Pensa Cola , Florida for more training. He loved to fly and flew precision flights with three other pilots. They did acrobatic flying at different places in the United States for the Air Force. They also taught bombing techniques. He had flown Torpedo Bombers in the Navy and had flown off the WASP aircraft carrier during WWII. Another ship he flew off of was the SOLOMON. In the guard, he flew P-51 fighter bombers.
Bill Elsom was killed in Korea north of Pongyang. He was leading a flight and straffing when his aircraft malfunctioned at about 500 feet and went down. The plane exploded on the ground. His wingman saw it. Bill had flown nineteen missions. It was a period called the Air Interdiction. The Red Chinese had entered the war. He was listed as missing-in-action for two years after his death even though we knew what had happened. His only son Dan was born three days after he was killed. Labor began after his mother heard that he was missing-in-action. He was awarded the Air Medal after his death.

Minabelle next married Joseph Lewis Romano, son of John Anthony Romano and Mary Mancini, on 14 Feb 1953. Joseph was born on 5 Sep 1920 in Lafayette, Colorado and died on 30 Jul 1992 in Evergreen, Colorado aged 71.
General Notes:
The family came from Castelpizzuto (Province of Isernia, Region Molise, Italy). A village not too far from Naples.
Joe's parents marriage was arranged. When he was a baby, his father was a shoemaker and mother was the traditional housewife. The family was first generation in the USA. They suffered a great deal from prejudice. The Italian custom of eating and behavior prevailed. They usually ate very well because Mary Mancini Romano, his mother was a gardener. They ate wonderful fresh foods even through the 1930's depression when they suffered much poverty. She was an excellent cook.
There is much conjecture as to Joe's involvement with the Mafia. I know that his good friend Jimmy Cavaleri was connected with the mob. I have listened while they were planning strategy over the Denver Airport Bonds with a Jewish man.
Soon after I married Joe in 1954, he became involved in a Used Car Lot in West Denver. He was partners with Cavaleri and another man (can't remember his name). We used to vacation a lot in Vegas which Joe liked. I was bored. Jim Cavaleri had a show girl friend named Bubbles. She shot him once but did not kill him. I always liked Jim's wife and admired her that she could take all of his mistreatment. She had a kind of presence and did not believe a lot of it was worth fighting about. She was Italian. Later Cavaeleri divorced her and went with a younger woman. I've always felt sorry for her but perhaps she was better off. Teren worked for Cavaleri at his restaurant in Evergreen. We spent one vacation in Cuba and on the way visited an Italian family in Chicago. Joe wanted to start a Union for women bartenders. (I think there was more to it than that.)
One thing I know is that the connection with Caveleri began when John Romano, Joe's dad was bootlegging in South Denver during prohibition. He went to jail for that. Anyway, this Italian family had basements full of stolen goods. I remember their houses always had a lamp in the window, plastic coverings over the furniture in the living room and big basements. While I was there, one of the family had stolen the man hole covers off a job another member of the family had done. There was a big hullabaloo over that. I told Joe if he was going to do the Union deal, he would have one less wife. Surprisingly he listened, I think.
The family kept telling me that I should accept some golf clubs, and when I got arch and on my high horse about that, they said. "You would accept Ton thousand dollars if someone gave it to you wouldn't you." I said it would depend on where it came from.
It was quite an experience because you couldn't go out the back door without locking it. Uncle Vito's house was bombed last week. The other thing was they ironed socks. I never connected them with the mob. Of course I didn't know much about the mob then. Of course they were.
I remember too in Cuba when I wanted the fourth Martini and Joe didn't want me to have it. He leaned over the table and hit me in the face in the Tropicana nightclub. That was owned by Johnny Rocelli , I believe of the Giancana (Chicago) mob.
I found myself in the kitchen with an Italian man who said he was from the south somewhere. He asked me if I know Batista. (Current dictator of Cuba) I said no. He offered to take me to his Villa by the Sea. He thought Batista was a good guy. Since I was not interested in a fling with him he took me to a really dumpy place where I tried to call my parents. This man was Italian and said he thought it was really bad that Joe had hit me. He said he thought I should leave Joe. I thought it was really strange that one Italian would condemn Joe for his treatment of me. He must have been some sort of body guard at the Tropicana. That was one of the few times I really thought Joe worried about what may have happened to me.
We also stayed at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach. I was madly in love with Joe and had a memorable time with him in spite of all of this. Joe did know how to have fun in a way that my family did not know how to do. He was overtly affectionate. I had not experienced that in my life time. That along with my as yet untreated pathology had me hooked.
I should mention that Joe was a star athlete. He had Charisma that people rarely have. He had exceptional coordination and would have played baseball professionally. He played around Denver professionally and was once accepted to play for the White Socks in the major leagues. The war came along and stopped that. In his later years he was an outstanding golfer.

General Notes: Bob was Supervisor of the San Juan Forest Service with headquarters in Durango, Colorado.
He told me that he was trained for the same job as was his brother. His brother went ahead of him on an OSS mission. They sent him over about D-Day which was June 6, 1945. He said he wanted to get into action and volunteered to go. They sent him in to help the allies when they were surrounded at Bastogne. He was with the 222nd. He said he was one of tpersons who helped blow the gates at Dachau. When he saw what the Germans did there, he could not contain his rage at the Germans. He volunteered to go into Yugoslavia after the war and I think he may have worked with the Mousad (Jewish underground to track German War Criminals). He stayed in Europe for one year after the war and his girl friend married someone else. She did not want to wail for him. There are pictures of him with his Uncle Yubo in Yugoslavia. He used those relatives as a cover to track the German SS who were escaping through Yugoslavia to go to South America and make new lives, thereby escaping justice for the killing of the Jews.
