Morristown got its'
name from a man called Charles Morris. He was a provincial land surveyor.
His job was to measure land so it could be written on a map. Mr. Morris
surveyed ten miles south of Aylesford in 1859, this would make Morristown
137 years old.
Over the years Morristown has had many businesses. They included logging mills, an electric power station, and of course many farms. Some of the local businesses that are still open are the Shell Station owned by Glendon Harris. This garage was first opened in 1953. John E. Palmers' Building Supplies which was started as a sawmill and box factory. This was later changed into a sash factory where windows were made. Finally it was changed to the hardware store that it is now. Weiher's Market is owned by our neighbours Fred and Peggy Weihers.
Morristown is one of the prettiest areas in the valley during blossom time, and one of the busiest during harvest time. According to the 1991 Canada census the population of Morristown is about 250 people. If we include Millville it would be about 565 people.
The Morristown Baptist Church was built in 1874. This was not the first church in Morristown. The first church was located opposite the present church, in the middle of the old cemetary. It was shared at that time by the Baptists and the Methodists.
The first Morristown school was located where the Morristown Hall is now. School was held as early as 1839. The first school burned in 1858, a new school was built about 1862 and that is the same building that is the Morristown Hall today. All the schools in the area became consolidated in 1964. Morristown joined two years later, and the children were bused to St. Mary's Elementary School in Aylesford.
