What is Wire Nova Scotia ?
Nova Scotia has a well developed Internet infrastructure. Many
communities which have accessible public access to the Internet are now
expressing the need to use this new information technology to support
community economic development -- business development, employment
stratigies, supporting community ventyres, and creating networks to share
information.
Wire Nova Scotia (WiNS) is an initiative which addresses this need by
creating a network of student workers who will make the links between new
information technologies and community economic development in Nova Scotia.
Some facts about WiNS:
- Forty-nine students will be hired during the summer of 1996 to work
at community access computing facillities across the province. Ninteen
will work in Cpae Bretton and Mulgrave and 20 will work in mainland Nova
Scotia.
- Of the 49 student placement sites, 21 are Community Access Projects
-- community iniatives wich benefited from a recent Industry Canada
program to set up public access to computers and the Internet in rural
Canada.
- The remaining 28 placement sites ate, for the most part other public
facilities such as libraries, junior high commputer labs, community
networks, universities and colleges.
Who's Involved ?
- The project is being coordinated by teh Centre for Community and
Enterprise Networking at the University College of Cape Bretton. The
WiNS project was developed by the centre in association with the
L'Ardoise Enterprise Initive, Grassroots Information Association
(Antigonish), and the provincial Community Access Committee.
- In addition to the central coordinating role of UCCB, five regional
Support Sites will be providing management and support to a team of
students in their region. These Support Sites are located in: Sydney,
L'Ardoise, Antigonish, Halifax, and Yarmouth.
