Internet Training

Roadmap 96 Workshop

Conducted by Patrick Douglas Crispen of the University of Alabama, the original Roadmap Workshop debuted in the Fall of 1994, and rapidly became the most popular on-line Internet training workshop in history, with over 500,000 people participating. Roadmap 96 is a 27 lesson Internet training workshop designed to teach new "Net travelers" how to travel around the rapidly expanding (and often-times confusing) "Information Superhighway" without getting lost. This Workshop is sponsored by the Internic as a six-week email subscription course. It is being converted here on Glooscap into an HTML document. If you would like to subscribe to this Workshop by email, follow the instructions at the Internic Site, a good location for other Internet resources as well.

Make the Link Workshop

Tom Copley's Workshop is an eight week "distance education" workshop conducted entirely by email. The Make the Link Workshop is aimed at introducing the beginner to the World Wide Web, and focuses on how to gain maximum advantage from this Internet tool. The cost of the Workshop is $20 US. An inexpensive price for a good quality course.

EFF's Guide to the Internet

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has developed a wonderful and comprehensive guide to navigating on the net. Building on the "Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet", the document now comprises some 300 files. This latest version was published in September of 1994. As a result, it is dated in its concentration, and has little material about the World Wide Web. However, it provides a tremendous information resource, and an interesting portrait of net culture at a particular point-in-time.

World Wide Web FAQ

This FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document answers a multitude of questions about the web, for both novice and experienced users. As such, it is a useful complement to the EFF Guide described above. Written in the practical and breezy style typical of a FAQ document, this is a good way to get started, or to clarify well-defined questions about the web.

The ABC's of HTML

NCSA's (National Centre for Supercomputing Applications) web tutorial for an Introduction to HTML - the markup language for the web. This course attempts to explain what HTML is and how to create a basic HTML document for use on WWW servers. You will be introduced to the essential parts of an HTML document as well as some of the most commonly used options available. A very well-designed and easy-to-understand course.
