An old tradition that celebrates the beauty of nature. The custom in Japan was for each girl to display her collection of ceremonial dolls at her home.

This festival comes from the 12th century, when people made paper figures and cast them into water to rid themselves of illness or bad luck. Today's dolls are thought to come from these early paper dolls.

Holi (Hindu)

Celebrated on the day of the full moon in the month of Phalguna (March), when the wheat harvest has been gathered in. Many Hindu legends surround this festival.

Purim (Jewish)

The Purim story is about Queen Esther, who saved the Jewish people from massacre by the evil Haman. The nam Purim means "lots" and refers to the lots that were drawn to decide the day on which the Jews would be killed.

March - April Variable Dates

Passover/Pesach (Jewish) March 20 - 21, 2000

This eight day festival of freedom arriving with the first full moon of spring is the most important time of year for the Jews. Passover commemorates the escape of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt over 3000 years ago. Families spend weeks studying the Torah, cooking, cleaning and performing charitable acts. The family sits down to a cermonial meal called a seder on the first night ot the festival.

Easter (Christian)

Both Christian and non-Christian Canadians celebrate Easter as a spring festival. For many the Easter Bunny brings eggs and candies on Easter morning. The Ukrainian tradition of painting designs on eggs has become a popular part of this holiday.

Most important Christian holiday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead three days after His crucifixion on Good Friday. Christians typically celebrate Easter with church services, family meals, Easter eggs, and baskets of candy for children.

Mother's Day (Christian)

Also called Mothering Sunday, this festival falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent. It dates back to the Middle Ages, when people in remote villages returned to the main church, or mother church, in their parish for a special service.
